Step 1: Measure Your Dining Area

• Clearance around the table: Aim for at least 36 inches from the table edge to walls or other furniture so chairs can slide back comfortably. In smaller spaces you can reduce to 30 inches, but 36 is ideal.

• Rugs: If you plan to use a rug, select one that extends about 24 inches beyond the tabletop on all sides so chair legs stay on the rug when pulled out.
