Platform Bed Buying Guide: Sizes, Styles & Materials
Why Choose a Platform Bed
Platform beds are loved for their clean lines, modern profile, and the ability to support a mattress without a box spring. A well-built platform bed offers timeless design and sturdy, long-term support. Especially when it’s crafted from solid hardwood.
Step 1: Select the Right Size
Before you fall in love with a design, make sure it fits both your mattress and your bedroom.
| Mattress Size | Mattress Dimensions | Ideal Room Width* |
|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38" × 75" | 8'–9' |
| Twin XL | 38" × 80" | 8'–9' |
| Full | 54" × 75" | 9'–10' |
| Queen | 60" × 80" | 10'–11' |
| King | 76" × 80" | 12'–13' |
| California King | 72" × 84" | 12'–13' |
*Aim for at least 24" of walkway space on each side of the bed and at the foot.
Tip: Use painter’s tape to outline the frame dimensions (found on each product page) to be sure the footprint works in your room.
Step 2: Pick a Style That Fits Your Look
-
Minimal & Modern: Low profiles with straight, simple lines. An example of this would be our Beam Bed.
-
Mid-Century Influence: Tapered legs and warm wood tones.
-
Rustic or Farmhouse: Chunkier posts, visible grain, natural finishes. Our Monolith Live Edge Bed is the perfect look in this style.
Consider your existing furniture and flooring. Matching wood tones or intentionally mixing complementary tones both work well when planned.
Step 3: Understand Color Choices
Solid hardwood is the benchmark for durability and beauty. We also finish each of products with a variety of options that include:
-
Weathered Railcar: Rich, warm brown tones streaked with deep charcoal accents for a bold, rustic look inspired by vintage railcars.
-
Weathered Treebark: A deep, earthy espresso shade with natural grain variation, reminiscent of the rugged texture of tree bark.
-
Weathered Brown Mix: A balanced blend of warm mid-browns and subtle dark highlights, giving a versatile, classic reclaimed-wood appeal.
-
Weathered Barnwood: A soft, silvery-gray finish with subtle warm undertones, evoking the timeless character of reclaimed barn boards.
Solid hardwood beds are made to be incredibly durable, and can last for generations. Something veneers and particleboard can’t match.
Step 4: Plan for Delivery & Assembly
Danner Furniture beds are handcrafted to order and shipped via UPS Ground with curbside delivery. Legs and side rails are typically packed separately for easier maneuvering through doorways. Basic assembly is straightforward and all hardware is included.
Step 5: See Finishes Before You Buy
Because every piece is made to order, we recommend ordering a Sample Kit to view our finishes in your own space. You’ll get a credit toward your furniture purchase and peace of mind when selecting the perfect color.
